Lent

Lent is a forty-day preparation period for Good Friday and Easter which begins on Ash Wednesday and continues through the Thursday before Easter, excluding Sundays. In this penitential season, Christians around the world renew their commitment to prayer (right relationship with God), fasting (right relationship with self), and giving (right relationship with others). These spiritual disciplines slow us down, help us to see the world and our faith in a new way, and lead us toward greater shalom and justice.

We use the color purple in the sanctuary during Lent. The color symbolizes the
pain and suffering leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus, but also, as the color
of royalty, it anticipates the final resurrection and the hope of newness that will
be celebrated in Jesus’ Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Pentecost

From The Worship Sourcebook

Ten days after the ascension of Christ and fifty days after his resurrection, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples on the day of Pentecost. In the first century, Pentecost was already an established Jewish festival also known as the Feast of Weeks, which drew people from many nations back to Jerusalem (Lev. 23:15-21; Deut. 16:16). Pentecost symbolizes a new beginning.

“In celebrating Pentecost, the church: expresses gratitude for Christ fulfilling his promise to send “another counselor” (John 14:16), celebrates the work of the Spirit in renewing all of creation, professes confidence in the Spirit’s power for its mission, and grows in awareness of its calling to reach the world with the gospel.”
